Carter relishing Mauger reunion

Dan Carter is relishing a reunion with former team-mate Aaron Mauger when Racing 92 and Leicester Tigers lock horns in the semi-final of the European Champions Cup.

Racing ended Toulon's European dominance by beating their Top 14 rivals 19-16 in a tense quarter-final at Stade Yves du Manoir on Sunday.

Toulon have been crowned champions in each of the last three years, but there will be a new name on trophy next month after Maxime Machenaud slotted over a late penalty after taking kicking duties from Carter, who was hampered by a knee injury.

Racing are the only non-Premiership side in the last four following the Tigers' 41-13 rout of French champions Stade Francais at Welford Road.

The Tigers and Racing will meet at the City Ground in Nottingham a week on Sunday and mercurial fly-half Carter knows what to expect from a Leicester side with his ex-Crusaders team-mate Mauger as head coach.

"This means so much to this club – it is an historical game because we have never been to the semi-finals before," said the former All Blacks playmaker.

"To get this win over Toulon, who have been the benchmark in European rugby in Europe, is just brilliant.

"It gives us another week in the tournament and we know it is only going to get tougher from here on against Mauger's team. We will need to do our homework and prepare well for the game in two weeks' time.

"It is going to be a great occasion and I am really looking forward to it. It is a great competition and it is a big part of the reason I wanted to come here and play."

Machenaud missed three penalties before his decisive strike with time running out and Carter was delighted to see the France scrum-half hold his nerve late on.

"They are the moments you love to take in a game and to see Maxime kick that penalty was very pleasing. He is an 85-89 per cent goal-kicker and I just left him to it," said Carter.

"I have a little bit of a medial ligament injury and I just had to run it off. I wasn't 100 per cent and while it isn't a problem, I'll just have to manage my rehab."

Saracens and Wasps contest the first semi-final at the Madejski Stadium a week on Saturday.
