Leaders Connacht hold off in-form Ospreys

Connacht held their nerve to defeat in-form Ospreys 30-22 in an entertaining Pro12 fixture on Saturday.

Irish side Connacht returned to the top of the league for the first time since November by beating Zebre 51-34 last week.

And Pat Lam's men were on their way to a fifth straight win with two tries inside 11 minutes either side of a Sam Davies penalty for Ospreys at the Sportsground.

Connacht scored in the first minute when the ball was spread wide from a scrum for Bundee Aki to score, and they had a second when Niyi Adeolokun made the break from a line-out before the ball was worked for Aj MacGinty to cross over on the left flank.

But Ospreys, who entered the match having lost just once in nine league matches and with three away wins on the spin, roared back into contention with two scores of their own.

Winger Ben John scored Ospreys' first try after receiving a quick tap-and-go penalty from Davies and, after several attacks, Dan Baker barged over - Davies' extras putting Ospreys in front.

Craig Donaldson's penalty restored Connacht's lead before the break and Matt Healy span out of a couple of tackles to score the hosts' third try shortly after the restart.

Ospreys hit straight back as Rhys Webb crashed under the posts to bring the score back to two points.

Another Donaldson penalty stretched Connacht's lead but the hosts were handed a reprieve when Davies had a try ruled out for double movement.

Donaldson then split the posts again to leave Ospreys needing more than a converted score, a task that proved too difficult for the visitors.
