LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Victories by Arizona and San Diego State Saturday, April 15 solidified the matchups for D1A Rugby’s 2017 Quarterfinals. The Wildcats traveled to the United State Air Force Academy where they easily handled the Zoomies, 51-7, while the Aztecs prevailed over Utah in a shootout, 41-31.
Four Quarterfinal fixtures are on tap for Saturday, April 22 when four conference champions will take on the winning sides from the D1A Rugby Playoffs’ opening round. Lindenwood, which beat Davenport April 8 to advance in the postseason, will travel to Marietta, Ga. to face No. 2-ranked Life University.
After a dominant one-sided victory against Colorado State, BYU ventures to the Midwest where it will challenge Big Ten Universities’ best – No. 7 Indiana.
The top two teams in the California Conference will play for a place in the National Semifinals when San Diego State heads to the Bay Area for a rematch versus Saint Mary’s. Although no team in the conference gave the Gaels a tougher contest, Saint Mary’s bested the Aztecs, 57-5, in the beginning of March.
Arizona’s impressive handling of the West Conference Champions, Air Force, earns it another playoff date with a different conference champion – this time from the Red River. The Wildcats will press on to Waco, Texas where Baylor will try and win its first-ever D1A Rugby Playoff game.
Winning teams will advance to the April 29 Semifinals where four of the country’s best teams will be one game away from reaching the May 6 D1A Rugby National Championship at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. The D1A National Championship will kickoff at 4 p.m. PT and air live on CBS Sports Network.
