Golden Lions prop Julian Redelinghuys is recovering in hospital after undergoing neck surgery on Sunday.
The South Africa international suffered a serious neck injury during Lions' 55-17 Currie Cup semi-final defeat against Free States Cheetahs on Saturday.
Redelinghuys collided with Cheetahs hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld and was taken to hospital in Bloemfontein, where he went under the knife the following morning.
Lions team doctor Rob Collins said: "Julian's operation went well on Sunday morning. He had a fusion at C5/6 level. If all goes well, he should be able to return home later this week."
There was no word on how long Redelinghuys, 27, will be out of action.
