Melbourne Rebels have announced the signing of Japan international Amanaki Mafi on a marquee deal for the 2017 Super Rugby season.
The 26-year-old international, who starred for Japan at the 2015 World Cup, joins the club from next season on a one-year deal.
Mafi made the crucial pass that secured their historic 34-32 win over South Africa, as Japan gained international attention.
"Amanaki will complement our backrow very well through his power game in the contact area," Rebels head coach Tony McGahan said.
"As we saw at the World Cup, Amanaki makes his presence felt whether he's starting the game or off the bench."August 4, 2016
The Tongan-born Mafi will link up with the Rebels at the end of the 2016-17 Top League season, where he plays for NTT Communications Shining Arcs.
"I'm really grateful for this opportunity with the Melbourne Rebels to represent my company NTT Communications in Super Rugby," Mafi said.
"Super Rugby has been a long term goal and I can't wait to arrive and test my skills against the world's best players.
"Melbourne is a great city and it will be a privilege to be a part of the Rebels team."
